"Strictly speaking, the entire program of the Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints functions for the education benefit of its members. The writer is fully aware of the important part played by its auxiliary organizations and its Ward, Stake, and general administrative activities in this regard. However, this paper is devoted to that phase of the educational program which is more directly connected with regular week-day programs of secular and religious education. Thus, material illustrative of the contribution of the L.D.S. Chruch to the educational development of the west has been selected, with a desire to show how the Mormon Pioneers have been a propelling force in laying the foundation and paving the way for the present culture of the Intermountain West and that their descendants are now pioneering in what many believe will preserve American culture, i.e., 'character development through extra religious training.' Another desire of the writer is to explain the methods being used by the Latter-day Saints to promote character development, that the same are in harmony with some of the best recommendations in the field of Character Education in America today, and are not too elaborate nor exclusive for any Religion to use in increasing its contribution to 'character improvement.'"
