"The purpose of this study is to present as accurately as possible an account of the activities of Walter Murray Gibson--adventurer, Mormon, missionary, and politician--who struggled for wealth and power in the Hawaiian kingdom and who finally rose to the position of Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs in King Kalakaua's cabinet. It is also the aim of the writer to develop the material used in such a way as to give the reader an insight into Gibson's character and to reveal the extent of his influence over the rulers and their subjects from 1861 to 1882.
An introductory chapter is given over to a sketch of Gibson's early life in order to acquaint the reader with the varied experiences he encountered before arriving in the Hawaiian Islands. The remaining chapters contain a detailed discussion of his affairs in the islands and show the influential role he played in the social, economic, and political life of Hawaii." [author]
