"The purpose of this dissertation is to set forth the relationships of the Samoan community in Laie to the secular and religious forces of the village. These relationships include stresses within the Samoan group regarding the acceptance of American culture (and, in return, disregarding traditional Samoan practices), and the incorporation of the Mormon religion into the Fa'a Samoa system...The stress and change generated by the interaction of traditional Samoan culture with American and Mormon values will be the central theme of this dissertation."
