"This dissertation is a biographical sketch of John Willard Young, son of Brigham Young, with special emphasis on his efforts in the 1887 movement for Utah statehood. This man, was at one time being groomed for the first line leadership in the Mormon Church. John W. was an entrepreneur in early Utah, particularly in railroad building. He was constantly overextended and in debt. So often was this pattern repeated that it became a character flaw and a blockage to the flow of confidence he so needed and desired from his Church leaders in later efforts to secure statehood for Utah. Eventually misunderstanding led him to cease his efforts in behalf of the Mormon Church. Some who had observed his actions went on to become leaders within the Church and punished him by ignoring what he had tried to do. Thus, in time his name and contributions became almost as if lost."
