It is by no means significant that many of the specially funded Tanner Lectures delivered recently at the annual meetings of the Mormon History Association have dealt, to some degree or another, with early Mormon millenarianism. This occurrence is less surprising when it is realized that the lectures come in the wake of a decade that produced what one historian has called "a veritable blizzard of scholarly and popular writings in the often stormy field of millennialism." In significant ways, this phenomenon of the 1970s revised and advanced understanding of millenarian movements to the same degree that a simultaneous wave of publications revolutionized knowledge of black American slave culture. What prompts this essay is both the need and the opportunity that now presses upon students of Mormonism to reexamine past interpretations in light of new research.
