The traditionally accepted story of Artemus Millet's rapid conversion and his subsequent call to oversee work on the Kirtland Temple was examined for veracity and accuracy. Comparisons were made between Artemus Millet's autobiographical sketch, Joseph Millet, Sr.'s biographical sketch of his father, statements by Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and Joseph Young, and documented events in Church history between 1832 and 1834. The authors conclude that Artemus Millet's account of his conversion is probably the most accurate version. According to his own account, Millet's conversion took place over the course of several months, with a call issued to work on the temple coming later that year. The full text of Artemus Millet's 1855 reminiscence follows in an appendix.
