To celebrate the entrance of the Mormon pioneers into Salt Lake Valley, the first Mormon Pioneer Day celebration was held in 1849. It has persisted ever since in Mormon communities throughout the Intermountain West. The celebration of Pioneer Day is used as a way 'to explore how a sense of the past is maintained and understood in the present.' In Salt Lake City, Pioneer Day recently has become more of a showcase for cultural diversity to bring Mormons and non-Mormons together. Some brief observations are made about Pioneer Day celebrations (or avoidance of celebration) outside the United States. Celebrations of Pioneer Day in Kanosh, Utah, and Manassa, Colorado, are less markedly Mormon to accomodate multiculturalism.
