In writing a biography of Joseph Smith, Bushman has had to consider two key issues which have shaped the writing on Joseph Smith for more than a century. The first issue deals with the question of the position of the author on Joseph Smith's revelations, i.e., does he believe them to be true or not. Bushman argues that the modern reader is more tolerant and broad-minded, but that they still must grapple with the gold plates and the question of whether God spoke to Joseph or not. The second issue revolves around Joseph Smith's place in American history, i.e., what do Joseph Smith and Mormonism mean in American history?
