After joining the Church in 1853, the family of Johan and Johannah Larsen left Denmark in late 1854 to travel to Utah. They got as far as Mormon Grove, Kansas, where they spent the winter. Both parents died and the children in the family were split up. One of the children, Mary (age 7), was taken as a ward of an aged couple across the plains in 1856 in the Hunt company. She was mistreated and suffered terribly, losing both her feet to frostbite. All of the orphaned Larsen children got to Utah following different paths.
