Hundreds of artifacts were unearthed in earthen mounds in Michigan over the course of three decades. This strange archaeological hoax was perpetrated by James O. Scotford and Daniel E. Soper. It drew interest from the LDS and RLDS churches. James E. Talmage performed a scientific examination on the artifacts, including obtaining a sworn statement by the stepdaughter of Scotford that she had witnessed him manufacturing and fabricating the fraudulent artifacts. Talmage's uncovering of the fraud caused most scientists to ignore further discoveries by Scotford and Soper. Later, Milton R. Hunter tried to revive interest in the artifacts and tried to prove their authenticity
