Nathan Burr landed in California with others on the ship Brooklyn. He successfully hunted for gold after its discovery and then traveled to Utah in October 1848 with his family. After settling his family in Salt Lake, he joined a New York gold rush company headed to California as their guide in 1849. After coming down with a fever, he died in the gold fields southeast of Sacramento in March 1850
