Presiding Bishop Charles W. Nibley was the largest stockholder and general manager of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company. After World War I, the company raised prices. In 1920 the Cost of Living Division of the Department of Justice accused the company of profiteering. Some Church members denounced Heber J. Grant and Nibley and contended that the price increases were motivated by greed. Others argued that the charges being filed against the company were politically motivated. The indictments were eventually quashed but a subsequent collapse in sugar prices forced the company to declare bankruptcy
