During the Mormon's expulsion from Missouri in 1838, they found a cannon buried by Missouri militiamen. They dug it up and took it with them to Illinois. They nicknamed it the 'Old Sow' and it became the first field piece they owned. They later took it with them to Utah along with other cannons they either built or acquired. He describes the various engagements in Utah in which cannons were used against Indians. The 'Old Sow' exploded and killed a man in 1855 in Provo
