The history of the Knight Sugar Factory in Raymond, Alberta, Canada, is chronicled. President Joseph F. Smith pushed the project, funded by wealthy capitalist Jesse Knight, and operated and managed by northern Utah businessman Ephraim P. Ellison. The venture turned Alberta prairie sod into farms and created the Mormon town of Raymond. The factory's first production of sugar in 1903 was successful, but the waning interest of farmers in growing sugar beets resulted in the closing of the factory after a dozen years of operation.
