Utah voters will be voting on a tax credit proposal for those families who pay for tuition and other educational costs to have their children attend private schools. Proponents of the proposal argue that such a tax credit will stimulate the establishment of private schools and reduce the number of children going to public schools. They argue that the reduction in tax revenue for the state will be offset by reduced expenses in the public education sector. However, there is little reason for Mormons in the state to support such a proposal because they are generally supportive of the public school system. Many are also concerned about voting for a tax credit that would aid and abet the polygamists, many of whom teach their children at home.
