Discusses the history of women in American religion and suggests that scholars write the history of women's religious experiences in America with the intention of transforming religious institutions and making them more equitable. Women have played active roles in churches. Mormon women, for example, attempted to influence their church by emphasizing early teachings and practices that promised a larger role for women and by working in the Relief Society, an organization that gave Mormon women an opportunity to take effective actions to benefit their communities and a strong voice in political issues.
