Changes in fertility levels and patterns in the nineteenth century Mormon Utah culture are investigated. The database analyzed included 31,500 computerized family genealogies. Some of the variables studied included religious commitment (endowed/non-endowed) and residential status (central/non-central Utah). The results showed a decline in fertility over time, suggesting the employment of contraceptives or birth control. Both active and inactive Mormons, without regard to area of residence demonstrated a pattern of increasing fertility limitation at about the same time. This finding suggests that modernization/secularization variables may have some impact on the adoption of fertility limitation.
