"Robert Millet has done the LDS and RLDS communities a service by encouraging a closer examination of Joseph Smith's Revision (hereinafter JSR) of the King James Version of the Bible (hereinafter KJV). As Millet correctly observes, this work was viewed by its author as a central part of his prophetic calling, and a full appreciation of Smith's labors is impossible without understanding it carefully. While Millet's call for further study and closer evaluation is fully warranted, his approach is beset by several methodological problems. Rather than carefully analyzing data involved in this question and evaluating or interpreting traditional LDS and RLDS formulations of faith regarding the JSR in light of these, Millet takes the traditional formulations as his starting point and then selectively interprets data in light of them. As a result, Millet declines to address prior questions that are crucial in understanding his topic: How does the KJV function as a translation of the ancient language forms of the passages at issue, and how in turn does the JSR's textual 'contributions' relate either to the KJV or the ancient language forms of the text? He thus needlessly confuses the JSR with the biblical traditions and texts that antedate and lie behind it, and ultimately makes both of these sacred texts harder to understand. The JSR, the Holy Bible, and even the faith formulations upon which Millet attempts to ground his discussion all suffer in the process." [Author]
