In the article Hartley reviews the story of the Sea Gull Miracle of 1848. He uses contemporary diary and official accounts of the 1848 farm year. He concludes that the gulls did indeed come and eat crickets but that their efforts were by no means as extensive and miraculous as the traditional story portrays. Citing other instances of gulls munching on crickets and grasshoppers, he sees the 1848 gull-cricket encounter an example of a very common event in western natural history.
