Betsy Jane Loose Simons kept a journal of her experiences in the Muddy Mission in 1866. It is the only known woman's journal record of the Muddy and offers a view of the sacrifices and challenges of domestic work for women who participated in colonizing efforts. For the four months of her stay in the settlement of Simonsville, she was without the company of her husband.
