Ernest L. Wilkinson resigned as president of Brigham Young University and as Chancellor of the Church Board of Education to run for the U.S. Senate in 1964. This essay focused on his return as president of Brigham Young University and the separation of the two offices by Church officials. The decision to separate the two offices illustrates the mechanism by which some high-level decisions are negotiated and the fact that the process can be lengthy, involved, and sometimes painful.
