'Mormon attitudes and practices towards the Black residents of Africa have gone through three basic phases.' The first was 1830-1850--rhetoric in the Church talked of preaching to every nation, yet LDS missionaries were not sent to Africa. Second was the limited missionary phase from 1852-1950. Missionaries preached to white immigrant populations in Africa. The third phase saw Mormons become deliberately involved in working with African blacks.
