Freemasonry; Gadianton robbers; secret combinations

Addresses the argument that the Gadianton robbers were merely nineteenth-century Freemasons, transparently disguised by the term “secret combinations.” In 1828 Andrew Jackson used the term “secret combinations” in a vitriolic response to allegations made by Henry Clay. Jackson was a prominent Mason and would not have used the term in this fashion had it been known to refer uniquely to Freemasonry.
