Funding is provided by the library annually “for faculty stipends to adopt, adapt and build” open content. The funding has been very effective over the first three years: “we've spent $36,000 and we will hit the $1 million textbook savings mark.” This is one of the indicators of success. At the end of the year the faculty who received a stipend were required to submit “an online report and try to record it so that we could show it to subsequent faculty about previous faculty experiences. And that's proved to be very helpful and valuable as well.”
Upper administration has been difficult to communicate with, especially since funding should come “out of the General Fund, which would indicate broader institutional support.” This kind of support would increase the “institutional-wide morale.”
Events have included “convocations” where faculty in a room have a discussion. After a short introduction, they let the faculty take the microphone and great discussions happens. An indication of success in these instances is “how many people are genuine when they take the microphone and start talking about their experiences, good and bad. And then how many people actually show up and continue on with that conversation.” Both informal and formal “conversations about why we're doing this, why this is good, the value to students and the value to the institution.” These discussions lead to opportunities to build essential relationships that move the program forward.
