One of the most effective components of this program is the OER Creation Awards. The amounts “range from $2,000 for a single author, up to about $4,000 for three to four authors to produce a textbook.”
Success of the program is evident in that “44% of our instructors are teaching TXT0, 31% of our classes are TXT0, and we have saved over $4.6 million in textbook costs since 2016.”
The workshops are primarily to familiarize faculty with the problems with the high cost of textbooks and higher education and to train faculty to find open content on their own to adopt or modify. Faculty also find models for OER creation. This is a sustainable model allowing the program lead to focus on growing and refining the program as a whole.
Purchasing eBooks for faculty is another successful component of the program. In addition to this affordability effort, textbooks are placed on course reserve in the library.
