Beethoven, Ludwig van. 1770-1827. German Composer. Whilst he never visited Britain, Beethoven had important connections with this country, partly cultivated through his pupil Ferdinand Ries. His symphonies quickly became standard repertoire of the Philharmonic Society, which in turn commissioned music from the Composer, who in 1815 sent three overtures. More significantly, the Society inspired the composition of the Ninth Symphony. Whilst it was first performed in Vienna—the London premiere took place in 1825 , to an uncomprehending audience—the Philharmonic nevertheless sent the Composer £100 in response to a plea of poverty. Beethoven's piano music was undoubtedly influenced by the London Pianoforte School, and he himself owned a Broadwood piano. In turn, his heroic middle-period style was reflected by London Composers such as Ries and Potter ; and through Clementi 's initiative several major works of Beethoven were first published in London.
