van Beethoven, Ludwig. 1770-1827. Beethoven's overture Coriolan ( 1807 ) was written for a play ‘after Shakespeare’ by a Viennese playwright, H. Collin , but he may have had Shakespeare's play in mind. The slow movement of his first string quartet, Opus 18 No. 1, is said to have been inspired by the last scene of Romeo and Juliet, and when asked the meaning of the first movement of his piano sonata in D minor, Opus 31 No. 2, he replied ‘Read Shakespeare's The Tempest’.
