Dumas, Alexandre (or Dumas père ). 1802 – 70. French novelist and dramatist. A pioneer of the romantic theatre in France, he achieved fame with his historical dramas, such as Henry III et sa cour ( 1829 ). His reputation now rests on his adventure novels, especially The Three Musketeers ( 1844 – 45 ) and The Count of Monte Cristo ( 1844 – 45 ).
