The authors of this review commend Compton for the breadth of his research, but fault and disagree with him on the interpretation of the data. They fault Compton for his apparent dissatisfaction with the institution of plural marriage, which feeling undergirds his study. They particularly fault him for his interpretation of the kind of marriage Joseph Smith may have had with polyandrous wives. They argue that the evidence is too inadequate to determine with any surety for several of the women that Compton accepted were wives of the Prophet. They conclude with a testament to the honesty and morality of Joseph Smith
