As various editions of the Church hymnal have been compiled, occasionally hymns have been altered prior to inclusion in newer editions. For the 1948 hymnal, Alexander Schreiner received permission from John A. Widtsoe to alter the title and a few words of his hymn "Father! Lead Me Out of Darkness," so that the hymn would have a more positive tone. President Kimball requested that the words of "I Am a Child of God" be changed from "teach me all that I must know" to "teach me all that I must do." Overall, changes have reflected an increased sensitivity to women, Native Americans, blacks, and the international growth of the Church.
