-
Helpful in identifying the works of Charles T. Griffes, as well as identifying a number of materials written about him and his works.
-
Includes a chronology of Griffes' life, a bibliography of all literature written about Griffes, a complete list of published works by Griffes, and a discography of recordings that is complete through 1976. Also includes a list of first performances of Griffes' works. In the bibliography, newspaper and periodical reviews of performances are usually only provided for the first performance due to their extensive number. Also excluded are references to Griffes in most textbooks, music history books, and dictionaries. The bibliography does include books, dissertations, theses, and program notes.
-
Chapters include Introduction; Chronology of Griffes' Life; Bibliography; Chronology of Published Works; Discography, Parts I and II (By Record Number and By Composition); First Performances, Parts I and II (By Composition, Chronology); and an Index of Performers. The bibliography comprises the majority of the book and lists entries in alphabetical order by author (or title when no author is provided). Entries include basic bibliographic information and often are followed by a brief annotation. Reviews, recordings, and works are typically cross-referenced between each section. The discography is divided into two parts with different organization (by record number and by composition). Entries in the discography contain as much information as is available and frequently include contents, format, title of recording, record number, producer, performers, instrumentation, and work title.
