-
A resource to the life and works of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, intended for researchers and students.
-
The bibliography compiles articles from encyclopedias and dictionaries, newspapers, and music journals; books, performances, and reviews in French, English, Spanish, Dutch, or Italian. Content relevance ranges from exclusive focus to passing mention. The catalogue of compositions includes works whose publication was announced but remains un-located, as well as lost compositions and manuscripts from the Louis Moreau Gottschalk Collection that might soon find publication. Most of the recordings included for historical interest, though many are out of print. Information on piano rolls is compiled from catalogs dating 1900 to 1929.

The resource is divided into eight chapters with an index. Chapter 1 is an introduction and a chronology of Gottschalk's life. Chapter 2 is a bibliography and catalog of literature and modern performances. Entries are alphabetized by author, and include complete bibliographic citation and a brief annotation. Chapter 3 lists newspapers and periodicals. Entries are grouped within country of origin, and then listed alphabetically by city. Within each city, each newspaper is listed alphabetically, giving the year and day of the article. Author indicates the nature of the material with a couple words. Chapter 4 lists collections of Gottschalk materials in various institutions. Entries are grouped by content, and then listed alphabetically by city. Included is a brief description of the collection's contents. Chapter 5 lists manuscripts found in specified libraries. Entries are listed alphabetically by composition title, and include a brief annotation. Location is indicated by cross-reference to previous sections. Chapter 6 catalogs Gottschalk's compositions, divided into two parts. The first lists compositions by opus number. The second lists compositions alphabetically by title, and includes an annotation. Chapter 7 lists modern editions, alphabetically integrating entries by title and author. Entries include an annotation and a complete bibliographic citation. Chapter 8 lists recordings. Entries are grouped by instrumentation, and then listed alphabetically by performer. Noted is title, approximate year of recording, and record label and number. Reviews are listed with complete citation information. Also included is an index to recorded compositions, listed alphabetically by composition and cross-referenced. Chapter 9 examines Piano Rolls. Entries are listed alphabetically by composition and note the manufacturer and number for each roll. It concludes with a general index, integrated alphabetically by author, composer, title, and composition. Entries are heavily cross-referenced. Several black-and-white images of the composer are included.
