Institute for Musicology of the Research Centre for the Humanities and Hungarian Academy of Sciences. “Bartók Archives.” http://www.zti.hu/bartok/index.htm (accessed 1 August 2018).
-
Site outlining the Budapest Bartók Archives, which serves as a collection of sources on the composer and as an international research center.
-
The physical collection contains manuscripts of compositions, folk music collections, ethnomusicological studies, manuscripts of the composer’s essays and articles, originals and photocopies of Bartók’s letters, his library, miscellaneous documents and photos, and a reference library on the composer. The website is offered in English, Swedish, and German. The works list in chronological order includes all of Bartók’s compositions from 1890-1945. The list organized by genre excludes childhood compositions and begins with 1900. Lost works are included.

After selecting a language on the homepage, the site begins with a biography of Bartók. The next few tabs give an introduction, a record of types of materials, and a brief history of the Budapest Bartók Archives. The Publications tab consists of a selective bibliography, organized by type of material.
Bartók’s works list can be viewed in chronological order or by ensemble type (then chronologically). Each entry provides information such as catalog numbers, title, date, dedication, scoring, duration, movements or pieces, editions and arrangements, first performance(s), recordings, and/or other comments. The Manuscripts and Primary Sources list organizes the compositions by BB number (Béla Bartók Thematic Catalogue number) with an appendix of autograph sources of his cadenzas and transcriptions. These lists also include keys of abbreviations for the catalogs. There is also a specialized list of his compositions which were based on folk songs and instrumental works, organized by BB numbers. These entries include incipits of the folk tunes.
The bibliography is divided by type of matieral or language (writings by Bartók in collected editions, Bartók letters in collected editions, studies by Hungarian authors in Hungarian, studies in English, and studies in other languages). The next tab leads to a virtual exhibition of the composer’s life. The Events tab contains writings on past exhibitions and conferences. The Staff tab provides biographies and bibliographies for the contributors to the archive. There is also a contact page, conditions for using the research facilities, and links to other institutions dedicated to Bartók. A separate Bartók Correspondence button leads to an additional searchable catalog of letters to or from the composer. This site also links back to the archive site and sites for the sponsoring institutions. -
Detailed key of abbreviations for the works lists. Several options to view compositions, including a separate list for primary sources and manuscripts and another list for those influenced by folk songs.
-
No digital images of any scores or materials available. Viewing compositions by genre excludes works before 1900.
