Catalogue of the old music collections of printed music in Austria's National Library in Vienna. Useful to the researcher interested in printed music through the mid 20th century. Of particular interest for the researcher of Germanic composers as it includes many who are not well-known and not cited in the New Grove Dictionary.
-
Includes citations for all of the printed music holdings of the Austrian National Library in Vienna from the old catalogue. Covers composers from the Renaissance through the early 20th century Romantic period, but prints of the works begin in the late 18th century and go through the mid 20th century. The majority of prints originate from Germanic cities, though other European capitals are also represented. Includes works of well-known composers such as Palestrina, William Byrd, Haydn, Strauss, and Rimsy-Korsakov, as well as works of lesser-known composers such as Engel-Berger, Kamovitch. Various genres are represented: cantatas, operettas, piano works, folk songs, piano excerpts of choral and orchestral works, collections of airs for piano and string instruments, and arrangements of works by major composers.
-
Comprises the second part of a three part catalogue. 1. Katalog der Musikhandschriften (106 microfiche) 2. Alter Katalog der Musicdrucke (249 microfiche) 3. Katalog der Libretti (52 microfiche) The 249 microfiche include 155,431 citations. Citations are generally in alphabetical order by last name of the composer. A few genres are also inserted in which collections of that genre are cited within the genre category (waltzes, cantatas etc), instead of by composer. Ideally, a citation includes: composer name, title of work, composition dates, dates of composer, publication information (date, location, and publisher), physical description, performing forces, who donated the music, and librettist. Very few cards contain all of the above cited information. Nearly all cards contain the Music Holdings number on the top center of the card. Directly under this is the composer or genre name. Most contain the title of the work. What follows from that varies from card to card. Many inconsistencies in content and presentation permeate the catalogue. Some are type-written, others hand-written, and a number of cards have pasted information. Hand writing is often difficult to read. Information given on the cards is not in a clear and consistent format. It is often difficult to determine what the names and titles correspond to. Random notes and facts including pertinent information are often placed indiscriminately on the card. Sometimes information is repeated in multiple places on the cards. Numbers and letters are given no description and have no readily apparent significance. Cards were found in which a name was written twice, and no additional information was provided. Many cards lack physical descriptions, essential dates, and publication information. The categorization of arranger and composer is unclear making it difficult to use as a guide for cross-referencing. Works are sometimes cited with a volume and number within the volume, but it is unclear what is being referenced whether it is according to the library catalogue, or individual works in collected sets or volumes.
-
The inconsistency of this card catalogue makes it difficult to follow any general pattern or obtain the pertinent information one might be looking for. There is also much essential information missing from the citations. In many cases it would be difficult to use the citations as references.
