To help identify works by Leopold Mozart and locate the original manuscripts of each.
-
Includes all pieces composed and arranged by Leopold Mozart, as well as pieces on which he is known to have collaborated with other composers. Incomplete pieces and sketches are included. Also covered are treatises and non-music writings of Leopold Mozart, published both before and after his death.

Following a short biography and introduction, this book is divided into chapters, each dedicated to one or more genres of music, such as oratorios, symphonies, dances, etc. Genres of sacred music are presented first, then secular music. The final three chapters cover incomplete works, pieces in collaboration with other composers, and written documents. In most of the chapters, there does not seem to be any method for determining the order in which pieces are presented, except for the masses, litanies, and symphonies, which are organized by key from C up to B. Each piece is given an identifying number, based on the chapter and its location within the chapter. Coordinating numbers in other catalogs are also listed. For each piece, a date of composition and instrumentation are given, as well as a brief excerpt showing the main theme. Under each excerpt is a list of original sources, identifying when possible the library in which they are kept, and a list of modern editions, followed by notes on the piece and any relevant literature. The final third of the book is occupied by an appendix. The first section contains tables listing each piece, the location of the original sources, and the copyist of each source. The next section lists each of the copyists, which pieces they notated, and gives facsimiles of excerpts showing the handwriting of many of the copyists. Later sections cover watermarks on the original manuscripts, coordinating numbers in other composer catalogs, a list of the libraries holding the original manuscripts, and a bibliography of relevant sources.
-
Essentially a comprehensive listing of Leopold Mozart’s works, doesn’t exclude less important works or non-music sources.
