Kothe, Bernhard, and Theophil Forchhammer. Führer durch die Orgel-Literatur. Completely revised and expanded by Otto Burkert. Leipzig: Verlag von F.E.C. Leuckart, 1909.
-
To fill a gap in reference books on organ literature by providing an overview of the literature and making it easier to identify and select great works and hidden gems of the literature.
-
Includes a broad range of organ literature available in 1909. Works include methods and studies, etudes, church music, solo works of varying types, chamber music with other instruments, vocal music with organ accompaniment, literature on organ building and music, and many other types of organ music.
-
The first half is comprised mainly of methods and etudes in order of difficulty, then alphabetically by composer, which is followed by a section on works for church worship. The section on church worship is ordered by difficulty, then also consists of sections on specific types of church music. The second half of the index consists of concert pieces and is divided into many categories (Sonatas, Preludes and Fugues, Variations, Chamber Music with Organ, Songs with Organ Accompaniment, and many others), all of which are ordered into sections by difficulty, then alphabetically by composer. Writings on organ building and music are also listed. Content of the entries varies greatly, but typically include all bibliographic information, price in 1909, and often a short annotation about the work.
-
This index is quite dated, but this provides a unique source on organ literature, focusing on pre 20th century works that may no longer be in publication but once were.
