Zimmerman, Franklin B. Henry Purcell: A Guide to Research. Garland Composer Resource Manuals, ed. Guy A. Marco. Vol 18. New York: Garland Publishing Inc., 1989.
-
A manual of information on all things Purcell: editions of his music, a numbered list of complete works, select bibliography with commentary, brief biography, and a compilation of previously unpublished prefaces and dedications to his published works. Meant for students and general music lovers.
-
Classified work list is a self-proclaimed improvement of the last authoritative analytical catalogue of Purcell's complete works. Author intended for the preface/dedication compilation to be complete for every work published in Purcell's lifetime, but has omitted a few passages unrelated to music and is more selective of works published after Purcell's death in 1695. It consists mostly of title pages from English musical publications from 1667 to 1700. The selective bibliography is a commentary on major studies about Purcell's life and works, chosen for intrinsic value, relevance, and currency.

Book is divided into seven sections: Classified List of Work and Ascriptions, Biographical Sketch, Textual Matter from Editions of Purcell's Music, Selective List of Editions, an appendix, the bibliography, and an index. The Classified List is organized numerically by work number. Each item identifies the primary modern source and identifies items that are newly discovered or are of dubious authorship. The Biographical Sketch is 27 pages and self-explanatory. The Textual Matter section compiles prefaces and dedications of Purcell's published works. Entries are organized chronologically. It provides year of publication, name of the printer, the first line or title, subtitle, followed by any remaining information and numbers identifying the works ascribed to Purcell in the entry's publication. The Selective List of Editions is divided into two parts: collections after 1700 and individual pieces. In part one, entries are organized chronologically and provide work and section numbers. In part two, entries are organized by work number. The appendix is a list of works modeled after Purcell's compositions, alphabetized by author. The Bibliography is divided into two headings: A) Short Titles, Classified by Subject Matter and B) Full Citations with Selective Commentary. Section A subdivided into topics relating to various aspects of Purcell scholarship with entries providing only author and title. All entries are listed alphabetically by author beneath topic subsections. Section B consists of all entries from Section A, listed alphabetically by author, with complete bibliographic information and annotations. Last is an index, alphabetically integrated.
-
The most complete works list of Purcell's music by 1989.
-
The index is poor and unhelpful; appears to be only a selective list of the authors and editions referenced throughout the book.
