McCutchan, Robert Guy. Hymn Tune Names: Their Sources and Significance. New York; Nashville, Tennessee: Abingdon Press, 1957.
-
History of hymn tune names and their related tunes.
-
Includes tunes from early years of congregational hymn singing (shortly before the Lutheran Reformation). No criteria given as to why hymns were included or excluded.
-
Begins with an explanation of the purpose and history of hymn tunes, and then offers four different listings: An alphabetical list of tunes (includes the name, meter, melody of first phrase written in solfege, first publication or writing date, alternative names, and comments), a melodic index (tunes organized by melodic material), a list of tunes not included in the annotated listing, and an index of first words of hymns.
-
Because of the unclear definition of criteria for inclusion, it is not clear how much of the entire hymn repertoire is represented. The author professes there not to be any literature about the history of hymn tune names at the time of publication, thus did not include a bibliography.
