To bring attention to the 1,600 living composers instructing at institutions of higher learning in the United States and Puerto Rico through biographical sketches and lists of their compositions. Can also be used to find prominent students of the featured composers.

Covers 1,600 composers working at a college, conservatory, or university in the United States or Puerto Rico in the years 2000-2010 as well as their works. Also includes composers who retired or were appointed professor emeritus on or after September 1, 2001. Excludes composers born on or before September 1, 1930. Omits student compositions written before the age of 22.

Alphabetical by composer’s last name. Each entry consists of a short biography along with a chronological list of compositions. When the dates of the works are unknown, they are listed alphabetically. The information given for each composition includes: Title, date of composition, genre, performing forces, date of revision, commission and dedication information, and other pertinent information. Other information added as necessary to certain entries includes: Awards and Honors, Discography and Videography of Compositions, Computer Music Software, and Writings by the Composer. Index of names (including students mentioned in entries).
