DeVenney, David P. Nineteenth-century American Choral Music: An Annotated Guide. Fallen Leaf Reference Books in Music, no. 8. Berkeley, California: Fallen Leaf Press, 1987.
-
For the student of choral music or the choral conductor interested in publication information for nineteenth-century choral music. Provides a fairly comprehensive and focused source for choral music.
-
Includes works by composers who were active in the US during the nineteenth century and stopped composing or died following the end of World War I. A note from the work's guide states the following: Composers such as Stephen Foster, though important to the history of nineteenth-century American Music, are not included because they are primarily considered popular composers.
-
The catalog is organized alphabetically under composer. Underneath each composer is a listing of works with some or all of the following information: Performing resources required, Author/Translator of text, duration (if longer than ten minutes), publisher and dates of publication, location of manuscript, relevant citations from the bibliography of writings (listed in the next section alphabetically by name). Following the catalog are ten indexes: five indexes for different performing forces (Men's voices, Women's voices, mixed choir and orchestra, etc.), two indexes for different genres (sacred and secular), an index to titles, an index to authors/translators of text, and an index to the bibliography. These indexes are organized alphabetically by title, except the index to authors/translators, which is organized alphabetically by author/translator.
-
Detailed and organized with pertinent information and articles included. A very extensive repertoire guide, the works are also indexed by voicing and the source of the text. The bibliography gives references to selected writings about the composers and pieces referenced in the catalog.
-
Not much commentary on individual pieces.
