Day, Timothy, comp. A Discography of Tudor Church Music. London: British Library, 1989.
-
Provides an overview of and means of identifying recordings of Tudor church music.
-
All commercial recordings of Tudor church music which could be identified, found primarily at the National Sound Archive. Tudor music includes music written between between 1485 and 1625, and is extended in this discography to include the music of Thomas Tomkins and his contemporaries. The recordings typically include liturgical polyphony and non-liturgical music of a religious nature, and exclude hymn-tune arrangements and instrumental arrangements.
-
The discography begins with keys to abbreviations and other useful information on how to use the book, and then provides a substantial introduction to Tudor church music in the twentieth century. A chronological list of recordings then provides information on over 700 recordings of Tudor church music, including composer, record contents, performers, publication or broadcast information, and various other notes. Following this is a list organized alphabetically by composer, listing his works and recordings. A shorter index of performers and a chronological list of recorded talks on the repertoire or other performance issues.
