Kennedy, Michael, and Joyce Kennedy. Oxford Concise Dictionary of Music. 5th ed. New York: Oxford University Press, 2007.
A quick reference.
Includes over 14,000 entries of musical terminology (e.g. dynamic phrases, tempo markings, etc.) in English, Italian, French, or German; musical instruments; composers and their works lists; musicians, major musical locations (e.g. cities, famous cathedrals in which masses were performed, etc.); musical genres and forms; and major musical works. Entries pertain to western art music. The authors indicate that, since this edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Music is entitled “Concise,” many less-common entries have been omitted which had been included in previous editions.
Integrated alphabetical entries of musicians, musical terms, and topics. Most entries provide a brief description. The composer entries include historical background regarding the composer as well as an updated list of the works of that composer, organized first by genre (operas, symphonies, choral, chamber, piano works, etc.) and then chronologically by date published.
