Griffiths, David. A Catalogue of the Music Manuscripts in York Minster Library. Sectional Catalogue 2. [Bournemouth: Kenneth Mummery Books and Music], 1981.
-
Catalogues manuscripts contained in the York Minster Library.
-
Manuscripts range from the late 1600's to the early 1900's by composer or copyist.
-
After the Preface material follows the Catalogue, then three appendices and six indexes. The catalogue is organized chronologically. If there is one composer, the name is placed before the corresponding paragraphs, but if there is more than one composer, the informative paragraphs are placed first, then the information concerning the composers and their music with page numbers follow. The first paragraph contains either the word Copy or Autograph, followed by the approximate year and the copyist's name(s), if applicable. The following paragraphs differ in many entries, depending upon the size of the manuscript and its details. If there is one composer, the second and third paragraphs consist of a description of the manuscript (size, score or parts, single sheet or volume, number of pages, and watermarks). If it is a compilation of works by various composers, a short description of the compilation follows the description. The last two paragraphs consist of the name of the provider and information concerning the signature(s) on the manuscript. The three appendices include the names of the copyists, a list of music donated by specific families. The Indexes are as follows: 1. Composers; 2. First-lines and titles; 3. Copyists; 4. Owners, donors, association names; 5. Instrumental and vocal forms, performing media; and 6. General.
-
The six specific indexes provide much assistance.
-
Many abbreviations and somewhat confusing format.
