Author attempts to be comprehensive of all compositions of Britten. Much of the information used to create this reference guide was taken from the Britten- Pears Library and Archive which includes a sizable portion of the correspondence and manuscripts pertaining to the life of Benjamin Britten.

Begins with a chronology of Britten's life and works as shown from the resources of the Britten- Pears Library and Archive. Works appear at the date of completion. Indicates published works, premiere of performance and other activities of Britten's life. Second section is a catalogue of incidental music divided by genre and listed chronologically. Entries give title, date of composition, and purpose (ie. the film and/or director associated with the composition) Also gives a physical description of the manuscript and commentary on music as well as instrumentation. Gives location of the original manuscript. Third section lists Britten's recorded repertoire comprised of all commercially issued recordings. Divided into 3 sections. Britten as conductor, violist, and speaker. Gives date of first publication, title of work, composer, and record company code. Fourth section is a select bibliography of the writing and broadcasts related to Benjamin Britten. Indexes of Britten's works and a general index included at the end.
