-
A guide to resources on the life and works of Ned Rorem intended for any seeking information on this composer.
-
Discography consists of commercially produced sound recordings. Items in the bibliography consist primarily of articles, reviews of books, performances, and recordings; however, there are also non-musical sound and video recordings, interviews, and dissertations included. Items are exclusively in English and with the geographic scope of publication being primarily local, American newspapers and musical publications.

The resource is divided into four sections, a publisher directory, three appendixes, and an index. Section 1 is a brief biography of Rorem's career. Section 2 is a list of works and performances, entry numbers prefixed by the letter W. Entries are classified by genre and then are arranged alphabetically by title within each category. Provided information includes date of composition and publication, publisher, duration, medium of performance, literary source, commission, dedication, and dates of premiers and performances. A publisher directory proceeds, listing companies alphabetically by name and including contact information in the form of the physical address. Section 3 is a discography; entry numbers prefixed by the letter D. Entries are organized alphanumerically by record label and record number, and provide information on contents, performers, date of issue, and album title. Section 4 is a bibliography of writings by and about Rorem, entry numbers prefixed by the letter B. Entries are alphabetized by author or integrated alphabetically by title when anonymous. Provided is a complete bibliographic citation, an annotation, and/or a quote from the article. Appendix 1 is an alphabetical list of compositions, including individual songs in song cycles, distinctive subtitles, working titles, and titles of unpublished works. Appendix 2 is a chronological list of compositions. Appendix 3 is an alphabetical list of literary sources. It concludes with an index alphabetically integrating subjects, and personal, corporate, and geographical names. All entries are heavily cross-referenced.
-
Addresses all aspects of Rorem's career and life, including his books, plays, and professional opinions--not just his music. Quotations in the annotation of the selected item permit discernment of the slant, angle, or bias of material. The letter-number system of identification makes it easy to determine the nature of an item when searching through the indexes and is helpful for following material about a composition across genre.
