-
A guide to the life, works, and career of William Walton; for anyone interested in this composer.

The discography includes 78 rpms, LPs, cassettes, and CDs. Criteria are items known to the author not found in Alan Poulton's discography, and those postdating his volume. Materials cited in the bibliography are articles, books, theses, dissertations, articles by Walton, reviews, and one video recording. Items are in English coming primarily from the United Kingdom and the United States, with a few in German, Serbo-Croatian, and Italian.

The resource is divided into five sections (biography, works and performances list, discography, bibliography, and archival materials), two appendixes, and an index. All entry numbers are prefixed with a section-unique letter. Works and performances entries are alphabetized by title, providing a description and publication information. First performances mention performers, place, and date. Discography entries are alphabetically classified by composition's title, and then list the recordings chronologically. Entries includes recording company, number, date, format, re-releases (if any), and performers. Bibliography entries are classified by publication format, and then integrated alphabetically by author (or title if anonymous). Complete bibliographic information is provided with an annotation. The archival materials section alphabetically lists collections of Walton manuscripts and Waltoniana by institution. Appendix I is a chronological list of compositions and first performances. Appendix II is a classified listing of works. It concludes with an alphabetical index of names and performing groups. Sections are cross-referenced.

The letter-number system of identification makes it easy to determine the nature of an item when searching through the indexes and is helpful for following material about a composition across genre. The author directs the reader to more comprehensive Walton scholarship in areas where she states her volume is not attempting to compete.
