Kreitner, Kenneth. Robert Ward: A Bio-Bibliography. Bio-Bibliographies in Music, ed. Donald L. Hixon. No. 17. Westport: Greenwood Press, 1988.
-
A concise but comprehensive bibliographic guide to the works of Robert Ward.
-
Ward's music is documented from his first student work in 1934 until 1987. Performances are listed if referred to by an item in the bibliography, or is represented by a program or artifact in the Duke University Archive. The discography comprises only commercially-produced recordings. The bibliography consists almost entirely of reviews, but also includes a few interviews, books and articles from dictionaries and music journals. Most reviews come from local newspapers in the United States. The primarily language of all items is English, with a handful in German.

The resource is divided into four sections (biography, a complete workslist, discography, and bibliography), two appendixes, and an index. All entry numbers are prefixed by a section-unique letter. Works list entries are arranged chronologically and provide basic bibliographic data, information on the premiere, agent holding the rights, duration, references, genre, texts, movements, dedications or commissions, publications, sketches, re-workings, instrumentation, and some selected performances. Ward's twelve student works are combined into a single entry. Discography entries are arranged chronologically, providing information on the title of the album, record company, serial number, performers, Ward compositions included, and a list of other compositions also on the album. Bibliography entries are alphabetized by author, and include complete bibliographic citation and annotations that quote from the item's content whenever practical. Interviews are indexed at the section's end. Appendix 1 is a list of works by genre. Appendix 2 is an alphabetical index of titles. It concludes with an alphabetical index of names, places, and compositions. All sections are cross-referenced with one another.

The resource was written with the consultation and assistance of the composer, making it possible to track and document the composer's regular revisions, recycling, and re-titling. The letter-number system of identification makes it easy to determine the nature of an item when searching through the indexes and is helpful for following material about a composition across genre. Quotations in the annotation of the selected item permit discernment of the slant, angle, or bias of material.

The resource was written with the consultation and assistance of the composer. Discography was complete as of 1987; it is most likely outdated now.
