Citron, Marcia J. Cécile Chaminade, a Bio-Bibliography. Bio-Bibliographies in Music, no. 15. New York; Westport, Connecticut; London: Greenwood Press, 1988.
-
Helpful in identifying the works of Cécile Chaminade, finding recordings of her works, and identifying sources written about her life and works. Serves as the first scholarly book on Cécile Chaminade.
-
Includes a thorough listing of Cécile Chaminade's compositions, a discography, a list of important performances, an extended biography based mostly on a collection of primary sources held by her heirs, and a bibliography of various types of sources written about Chaminade.
-
The first section of the book is a biography, which is intentionally long because of lack of information on Chaminade or erroneous information and also because of the primary sources available to the author. The second chapter consists of works and performances, with the work being listed and followed by a list of selected performances. This chapter is divided into four sections: published works with opus numbers (listed by opus number), published works without opus numbers (listed chronologically by publication date), published collections of her works, and unpublished works. The section on unpublished works also includes important arrangements of Chaminade's works and provides autograph information. The third major chapter is a discography listing every commercially produced recording, whether available or not. The discography is divided into three sections: recordings of individual works, recordings of more than one Chaminade work, and recordings by Chaminade. Entries include as much information as available. The fourth chapter is a bibliography, listing over 475 sources on Chaminade. These sources are organized chronologically to provide another biographical type of overview of Chaminade's life and works. Entries in this section include as much bibliographic information as could be provided. Appendices include an alphabetical list of works, a classified list of works, and a summary of archival resources. An index is also provided.
