Ahouse, John B. and Kee DeBoer. Daniel Pinkham: A Bio-Bibliography. Bio-Bibliographies in Music, ed. Donald L. Hixon. No. 12. Westport: Greenwood, 1988.
-
A bibliography of Daniel Pinkham's work to address growing popularity and rising numbers of performances of his music.
-
Criteria for the bibliography are books, articles, and reviews that display how the composer's work has been received and give readers access to general contemporary opinion and scholarship. All selections are in English. Items in the discography are all commercially produced sound recordings.
-
Resource is divided into a publishers directory, four sections, four appendixes, and an index. The publishers directory is a guide to the short names associated with a publisher and links them with their physical addresses. Section 1 is a short biography on the life and works of Pinkham. Section 2 is a complete catalogue of works and a list of selected performances, with entry numbers prefixed by the letter W. Entries are classified by genre/performing requirements, and then are arranged alphabetically by title. Information provided is vocal/instrument layout, duration, text source if appropriate, and publisher. Section 3 is a discography, with entry numbers prefixed by the letter D. Entries are organized alphabetically by the title of the work performed and provide information on the record label number, the release date, performers, and other composers whose works are included on the recording. Section 4 is divided into two parts. The first includes general reviews of composer's music or of multiple works grouped together, with entry numbers prefixed by the code BG. Entries in this part are alphabetized by author. The second is a compilation of reviews of specific works, entry numbers prefixed with the letter B. Entries in this part are grouped under title of composition, which is listed alphabetically, and then arranged alphabetically by author under the subheading. In both parts of the bibliography, entries provide complete bibliographic information and a brief annotation that often quotes from the item. Appendix 1 is a chronological listing of works by date of composition. Appendix 2 is an alphabetical listing of works by title. Appendix 3 addresses poems used as text, listed alphabetically by author. Appendix 4 is a list of Biblical sources used as texts. Most all appendixes and sections are cross-referenced.
-
Quotations in the annotation of the selected item permit discernment of the slant, angle, or bias of material. The letter-number system of identification makes it easy to determine the nature of an item when searching through the indexes and is helpful for following material about a composition across genre.
-
Author admits that Pinkham is a very active and prolific composer, so any attempts to provide a complete works list will be quickly rendered obsolete until the composer's death. Discography does not state the format of a recording.
