The authors analyze the systems of formalized values in Israeli society which show a variety of patterns concerning the position of women. They state that the main characteristic for defining the relative position of women are those of similarity and equality which exist in three combinations. The first, similar and equal, characterize the basic laws defining primary rights and duties in the main areas of role activity: the labor market, political activity, economic activity and education. The second, dissimilar and equal, was viewed as the basis for welfare laws which recognize a sex differentiation between men and women. As such, the differentiation is seen as a legitimate basis for differential treatment of men and women.
